Legislators volunteer at Marion-Polk Food Share
Nine Oregon state legislators and their aides put on hair nets and packaged chili mix for the Marion-Polk Food Share on Tuesday night.
“Rather than us trying to tell them the story, we are having them come here and see what we do,” Food Share President Rick Gaupo said.
It’s the fourth annual day of service for the legislators organized by representatives Tim Freeman and Jules Bailey. In 2012, they served meals at the Union Gospel Mission.
“Our group was so large that it didn’t work there,” Freeman said. “So we decided to come back and do a food bank again this year.”
Salem Rep. Kevin Cameron bagged chili mix while Silverton area Rep. Vic Gilliam labeled them with stickers indicating they were made by members of Oregon’s State Legislature.
“I hope they’ll still eat it,” Gilliam joked.
Gilliam and Cameron said they regularly donate to Food Share.
“I’m happy to be down here,” Gilliam said. “This organization makes my food bank in Silverton happy.”
