April Good Works
April is one of the pivotal months – our weather turns to more sunshine and less wind, students are back at school for the last stretch of classes before summer, and there are literally tens of good works going on in our community.
Next week two events that hit home for me are in support of the good works. The first one is the Marion County Public Works breakfast to benefit our employee food drive. Public Works will be serving up an amazing breakfast on Wednesday, April 20th from 6:15 – 8:30 AM, at their facility located at 5155 Silverton Rd NE, Salem. This is a fundraiser for the Marion County Employee Food Drive benefitting Marion-Polk Food Share. The talented cooks, from PW, will be serving pancakes, biscuits and gravy, breakfast burritos, scrambled eggs, and link sausage along with coffee and juice for $6.00 for your first plate and $4.00 for seconds. (There will also be “to-go” containers available.) No rsvp is necessary for this popular breakfast, however if you plan to attend just let me know. You’ll get a great meal while helping to feed others – what a nice way to start your day!
The second good work happening takes place on Thursday evening the 21st and is inspired by the experience and hearts of Sam and Jennifer Skillern and their story of being a “safe family.” Join them and other families in our community who are taking action to prevent child abuse and neglect. Walt Beglau, Marion County District Attorney will facilitate this program “you: the first step in preventing child abuse.” Doors open at 6:30 PM, the program begins at 7 PM at the Loucks Auditorium, Salem Public Library, 585 Liberty St SE, Salem. This program is sponsored by the Salem Leadership Foundation through the Fostering Hope Initiative.
Lastly I want to remind you of my “Sixty 4 Sixty” fundraiser. As I shared earlier this month our mothers can have an amazing influence on our mindset and future. Sixty years ago my Mother was not fooled by my April 1st arrival. It was also Easter Sunday! The only time in my 60 years they fell on the same day.
In the spirit of celebration and fun I am commemorating my 60th year with a challenge to family and friends alike. “Sixty 4 Sixty” – donate one dollar for each year to Kevin Cameron for Oregon. Make a $60 4 60 years birthday donation during the month of April and receive a personalize autographed copy of Gerry Frank’s Oregon (3rd edition). To donate follow this link: https://kevincameron.nationbuilder.com/donate.
I continue to be grateful for the support received from so many; and I hope to see you out and about at one of the many good works taking place in our community.
