April News
APRIL IS HERE! Time seems to be flying by this year, although the rainy season hasn’t passed us by soon enough. As one who always tries to find the positive side of any situation, I am thankful for the rains that have come this year. We have had very little flooding even with record rainfalls.
It looks as though we will have a very full Willamette Basin Reservoir system, supplying plenty of water for our agriculture, fish, drinking water and recreation needs. After the last two years of drought conditions, we are experiencing a “good” year for water. However, believe it or not we will still need the late spring rains to get the capacity to 100%. I have included a link to the Army Corps Willamette Dam/Reservoir system for you to explore in more detail if you wish. As I write this newsletter the entire system is at (73/6) 73% and that is 6% over the Water Control Diagram (WCD). http://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/Missions/Water.aspx
The North Santiam River Canyon is an area of concern for Marion County and our rich recreational opportunities. The Detroit Reservoir is at (73/7) 73% full and 7% above the Water Control Diagram at the time of this writing. http://detroit.lakesonline.com/Level.asp. We need more rain this April to reach the full capacity (+27% more room to fill). So when the April showers hit your head, remember the good things that will come later when the sunshine really heats up!
APRIL is – Child Abuse PREVENTION Month – at our last March Board Session we approved a Proclamation of April being Child Abuse Prevention Month in Marion County. I had an emotional time reading the proclamation thinking of how important and yet venerable our little ones are and we have parents struggling in their own lives; trying to provide a positive environment for these little ones. Too many slip through the cracks from broken homes and personal lives.
Again this year, there will be a tree filled with too many ribbons in front of the Oregon Capitol, recognizing each little life that has suffered from abuse in the past. If you have a chance to visit, please spend some time in prayer for our community and these precious human lives. Then I would ask that you consider what you can personally do to help with your time, talents and treasures to make a difference in prevention.
