Government In Action
Many of you have taken the initiative to speak out on the Army Corp of Engineers proposed project at Detroit Dam. Thank you to the hundreds who turned out for meetings and signed my petition. We will continue to collect signatures for the petition which outlines concerns about this project. By signing my petition we are sending an important message to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that they must protect our economy and water supplies. As a petition signer you will receive updated communications including the opportunity to have future input on this critically important issue.
I will continue to monitor the progress of this work; we anticipate the timing for the next round of activity on this issue to be this fall.
The short legislative session about to open presents a few challenges for Marion County with regards to economic development and taxes.
My first priority is the extension of the Aurora Airport runway by 1,000 feet. This extension will enable corporate jets and jets with greater payloads to utilize the airport. As the FAA has jurisdiction over the airport we are working on state legislation that will allow this extension, hence allow more commerce to flow through the airport and subsequently the region.
The second priority is the cap and trade legislation, which in its current form has exempted landfills, but not the “waste to energy,” WTE, facilities from taxation. And the funny thing about this is that the WTE facility in Brooks reduces waste and creates clean energy. While I am not a fan of this legislation; it if is going to pass we need to exempt the WTE in Marion County to protect our citizens from increased garbage rates.
In late January your Board of Commissioners unanimously selected Denyc Boles to represent House District 19. Denyc will fill the vacated seat through January 2019. Commissioner Carlson shared: quote about Denyc’s demeaner. Having personally worked with Denyc I know she will do a great job serving the citizens of South Salem, Turner and Aumsville.
The primary election season is quickly creeping up. I have filed to run again for Position 1 on the Marion County Board of Commissioners and I hope to secure your support. This entails placing yard signs, raising money and continuing to meet new people.
